Board of Management

Ian has 20 years’ experience within the social housing sector and is currently employed as Head of Older Persons Housing at Derwen as part of the Pobl Group. Previous experience with other housing associations has included asset management, housing management, development, community regeneration, community engagement and governance.

Currently Chair of the Board of Management Committee, Ian’s extensive and broad knowledge has enabled him to support the Board at both operational and strategic levels. Ian shares the values and philosophy of the organisation and was attracted to the role as he is aware of the positive impact MTHA has on both its tenants and the wider community.

Tom joined the Board to offer MTHA his skills and experience as he has worked in the housing profession for over 17 years. Tom has a broad spectrum of knowledge in relation to homelessness, housing management, community development, affordable housing delivery, performance and
regulation.  Tom is currently employed at Melin Homes where he holds the role of Director of Business Improvement.

Tom is passionate about housing and the crucial work carried out by Housing Associations in our communities.  Tom is currently also on the Board of CIH Cymru and hopes to use his knowledge and experience to support the positive work being undertaken at MTHA.

Denise is fully aware of the need for safe, well maintained social housing. Denise’s working life has encompassed both private and public sector working relationships at management level. This has provided her with sound experience to benefit MTHA in all aspects of the business.

Denise is also an active member of the community and has sat on the committee of Macmillan Cancer Support as Chair and Merthyr and Mid Glamorgan Magistrates Advisory Panel for the allotted 8 years before retiring. She is currently on the Committee of Merthyr Naturalists Society and was Chair and founder member of Ar Agor Photographic Society. Denise is a beekeeper and member of Beacons Bees, which was awarded Most Enterprising Rural Business of the Year in 2015.

Having gained exceptional skills during his career with Her Majesty’s Armed Forces and within the construction/sales industry, Stephen has since become a pro-active figure in the community who is a strong public speaker and network specialist.

Stephen joined the Board of Management as he felt he was able to support his peers with executive decisions as he has a great understanding of community issues and the challenges faced by our tenants within those communities.

Currently employed as National Business Development and Project Manager at Residential Sprinkler Protection Ltd, Stephen works closely with architects, building control, construction and housing professionals to ensure all standards are met and achieved. It is this knowledge that will assist the Board of Management during the decision making process with regards to MTHA’s Growth and Diversification strategy.

Huw has recently joined the Board as he is keen to make a contribution to the future wellbeing and enhancement of the organisation.

In his own words Huw has little proven experience in the social housing sector but has been active in the local affairs and adult education within the borough of Merthyr Tydfil for over 40 years. Huw remains very active in the community through Aber Arts Wales and has an extraordinary knowledge
of the town’s history and is totally committed to the safety, viability and employability of the people of Merthyr Tydfil.

Robert joined the Board keen to utilise his skills, gained from a successful career in social housing at Hafod Care. It is Robert’s wish to contribute to the future development of Merthyr Tydfil Housing Association as he has exemplary knowledge in housing management, maintenance, social care and support, health and safety, governance and finance.

Robert remains active in the local community and is involved with numerous social and sporting activities; it is this interest and professional experience that will help him to make a positive contribution to the Senior Management Team of MTHA.

Liam is employed at BTP Associates in Merthyr Tydfil dealing with many local businesses. A qualified accountant, Liam acts in an advisory capacity for clients and helps implement strategies and evaluate performance.

Liam wished to join the Board to improve his understanding of the local community, the challenges faced by our tenants and to provide financial expertise to aid decisions made at Board. Liam is keen to assist with all financial matters including budgets in order for the organisation to achieve its objectives.

Tim is now retired having qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1981.  He worked in professional practice between 1977 and 2015 with a wide range of organisations in the public, private and not for profit sectors including a number of Housing Associations both in Wales and England.

Tim has excellent knowledge of the housing sector and decided that upon retirement he would like to use some of this knowledge and skills base and give back to the community.  Tim feels he can bring something positive to the Board to help the organisation deliver its Business Plan.

Helen joined the Board as she wished to be a part of a committee sharing similar views and values to her own.  Aware of the excellent reputation of MTHA, Helen wanted to be a part of a forward thinking management committee and one that is committed to improving the lives of people in the
local community.  Having grown up in Merthyr, it was also Helen’s wish to give something back to the community where she went to school.

Helen has over 15 years HR experience and 10 years’ experience working in the Housing Sector. In 2015 she set up her own business & supporting businesses with HR matters and co-ordinating their corporate and social events.
