This summer, thanks to generous funding from StreetGames through the Pipyn Actif programme, we’ve been able to bring even more opportunities for families across our communities to get active, connect with neighbours and enjoy healthy food – all on their own doorsteps.
The Pipyn Actif fund is designed to encourage families across Wales to lead healthier, more active lives, and we’re proud to be using this support to expand our much-loved Street Play and Street Food initiative.
Bringing Communities Together Since 2009
Street Play has been at the heart of our community work since 2009. The idea is simple but incredibly effective – we bring play, sport and activities directly into the streets where our tenants live.
By taking activities into neighbourhoods, we remove many of the barriers that prevent families from getting involved, including the cost of equipment, transport and access to facilities. Children and adults alike can step outside their front doors and join in the fun.
But Street Play is about much more than games. Every session helps strengthen relationships with our tenants, builds trust and creates opportunities for us to listen, support and work together to make our communities even stronger.
Adding Healthy Food to the Mix
This year, Pipyn Actif funding has enabled us to take our programme even further by introducing Street Food sessions alongside our play activities.
Families have been learning practical, healthy cooking skills right in the heart of their communities, discovering affordable and nutritious recipes that they can recreate at home. As an added bonus, everyone who takes part enjoys a free healthy meal during each session, making it a fantastic opportunity to eat, learn and spend quality time together.
Supporting Families When They Need It Most
We know that many families continue to face financial pressures. In a recent affordability survey, 75% of tenants told us they were worried about the rising cost of food.
School holidays can place even greater strain on household budgets, with parents balancing increased food costs alongside finding affordable ways to keep children active and entertained.
Our combined Street Play and Street Food sessions are one way we’re helping to ease those pressures. By providing free activities, healthy meals and practical cooking skills, we’re creating welcoming spaces where families can have fun together without worrying about the cost.
A Summer to Remember
The laughter, smiles and community spirit seen throughout this summer’s sessions have been truly inspiring. From energetic games and sports to delicious healthy meals shared together, it has been wonderful to see families making memories, building friendships and embracing healthier lifestyles.
