Update on Haydn Terrace (Hillcrest Park)

Following the purchase of the site at Haydn Terrcae, Penydarren by Merthyr Housing, works are due to start on-site soon to develop 47 new affordable homes for rent. The new development will provide a mix of homes including 19 x one-bedroom flats, 23 x two-bedroom houses, 4 x three-bedroom houses and 1 x wheelchair accessible bungalow.

The site is located on the western side of Penydarren within the Galon Uchaf area, 1.5 miles north of Merthyr Tydfil town centre. The site has excellent transport links with close access to the A465 Heads of the Valleys Road and the A470.

The total project cost is £17million which is funded by grants of £10.6million from Welsh Government and private finance of £6.4million. The housing grant investment has been secured through the strong partnership working between Merthyr Tydfil CBC and Merthyr Housing to deliver the needs for new affordable housing in the borough.

The new homes will be built to the AECB CarbonLite standard, with the homes designed to be low-energy, comfortable, healthy buildings that significantly reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption. The building construction will rely on a high build quality that will undergo rigorous quality assurance to ensure the design and construction achieve the standard.

The scheme has placemaking at its heart, with a large communal space for people to congregate, play and enjoy, whilst making the most of the sloping topography by capitalising on the breathtaking views of the valley beyond.

The contractor, Hale Construction, will be undertaking the construction works. Hale are committed to making a positive contribution to the local communities within the borough both directly and through their supply chain and subcontractors. This will include new job and skills training opportunities and working with the local primary school on a variety of projects in and around the school. Our Community Development Team will work alongside the contractor to realise job and training opportunities and identify community benefits on the project.
